CHARACTER INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Kabane Kusaka
CANON: Kemono Jihen
TIMELINE: Chapter 47
AGE: 13

REFERENCE: Here is his wiki page, though it isn't up to date with the manga.

PERSONALITY:
Kabane's emotional development has been stunted to disturbing extremes, and this is clear to anyone who observes him for more than ten minutes at a time. The boy has no concept of common sense or appropriate social behavior. Despite this enormous handicap, however, once allowed even the slightest bit of self agency, Kabane has grown into his own at a remarkable rate. From discovering new emotions and motivations to developing his personal moral code, he is swiftly becoming his own person. Even if he's still rough around the edges.

The glaring elephant in the room when it comes to Kabane's emotional development is his devastating lack of it. He is the product of thirteen years of explicit and purposeful child neglect. While Kabane may once have been able to feel fear or hate or desire, his aunt killed that part of him, likely because she was the only one who knew he wasn't human and was terrified of him. She beats him down mentally until he's nothing more than a husk who sits unmoving in the corner until someone gives him an order. He quickly learns what's expected of him in this situation and adapts the way any child does. Thus, even the few emotional responses he manages to develop rarely appear in his flat facial expressions. It's easier that way. Reacting to or defying his torment would only bring further wrath upon him.

Luckily, Inugami arrives and pulls him out of there before it gets worse. A little encouragement, a promise, and a new home are all it takes for Kabane to allow himself his first taste of hope. He may be thirteen years late to developing an ego, but his eagerness to be useful skyrockets his growth to stunning new heights. He manages to make friends and learns how to express his appreciation for them. Once he has people he actually cares about though, he's swarmed by the litany of unfamiliar anxieties that manifest from one very important realization: he could lose them.

Almost immediately, this new motivating factor ignites a determination and unyielding resilience he's never felt before. He's willing to do most anything to protect his friends, and so he does. He does whatever it takes as many times as it takes for him to achieve his goal. Once he's made up his mind, not even a thousand failures can stop him from getting back up and starting all over again. No amount of shame or humiliation is a deterrent when his abusive upbringing ensured he never developed any pride to lose.

The first time he witnesses his friend being tortured, Kabane is overcome with another new feeling: rage. That rage hits him viscerally, a white hot flame rendered frigid and calculating by his inability to fully express it. He couldn't care less what happens to him, but hurt his friends or insult the sacred concept of friendship, and Kabane will not stand for it. How could he, when he's so desperately struggling just to keep the few friends he has alive? There is no excuse that could justify harming one of his friends, and he will make this clear by preaching kindergarten-level social values at any offender while tearing them limb from limb.

Because of these traits, Kabane can seem like an unstoppable machine on the battlefield. He's not so lucky when it comes to daily life. Kabane's childish outlook is simultaneously innocent and worldly, a dissonant perspective informed by his ignorance of love and his intimate knowledge of death. This allows for a child who readily consoles enemies that were just trying to kill him but also isn't disturbed by a factory raising human children as meat. It doesn't help that he's entirely straightforward when addressing these issues. Subtlety and tact are not his forte. He has to have many abstract ideas explained to him and fails to read the room on a regular basis. In fact, it's a running gag that he doesn't seem to realize decapitating himself in front of someone might upset them.

A naive inclination to trust is the icing that tops off this eccentricity cake. Kabane takes "innocent until proven guilty" to absurd extremes, and many have taken advantage of his resulting gullibility. He is so blind to circumstantial evidence that when his calculus is stolen and only the person sweating profusely while trying to escape has any motive, he turns to ask that person whether she did the deed, then trusts her answer completely. This is an easy stance for him to take with others since his pseudo-immortality means he doesn't have to worry about being killed. This implicit trust isn't something he extends to himself, however.

The only thing Kabane has ever been afraid of is himself. He is, after all, a man-eating monster.

ABILITIES:
▹ Pseudo-Immortality. Ghouls do not appear to die of old age. With ghoul fire in their veins instead of blood, their bodies don't even seem to deteriorate much. According to Mr. Inugami's limited knowledge, the only thing that eventually wears down a ghoul is reproduction, which consists of sharing a ghoul's flame with others in order to turn them into ghouls. Every time a ghoul shares their flame with another living creature, their flame weakens until it eventually goes out.

▹ Regeneration. Part of what ensures a ghoul's immortality is their amazing ability to regenerate. Kabane has been shot through the forehead, decapitated, cut into pieces, and even burned alive, but as long as enough of his brain remains, his ghoul fire will rebuild everything from scratch. It is implied but not stated outright that the only way around this is to completely destroy his brain faster than he can heal the damage. This should theoretically kill him for good as at least part of his brain needs to remain in some form for regeneration to take place.

▹ Super Strength. Most kemono seem to be stronger than humans, and ghouls are no exception. Kabane is at least powerful enough to tear limbs from their bodies and swift enough to leap up the length of a redwood.

▹ Lack of Pain. Because he is a ghoul, Kabane feels no pain, no matter how cruelly he is tortured.

▹ Kemono Stench. All kemono reek to high heaven. The manga has yet to compare the stench to anything, but it's bad enough that while staying in Deer Village Kabane was not allowed to be near anyone while they ate. Though humans are generally disgusted by the smell, other kemono aren't bothered by it at all. Rather, they use it as a way to identify and track their own.

▹ Monster Transformation. When the new moon hits, all hell breaks loose. While it's implied that ghouls are capable of being perfectly rational most of the time, the new moon heralds a disturbing transformation, both physical and mental. Ghouls will go mad with a craving for flesh, and any meal they partake will immediately begin to rot in their grip. Their bodies also morph, taking on the terrifying visage of a decaying demon. At Kabane's current canonpoint, he intends to learn how to control the ghoul transformation on his own terms, but he has not yet achieved this.

▹ Life Calculus. Every kemono calculus is imbued with an essence or power that aligns with the abilities of one species of kemono. Each of these calculi can amplify the right user's power. For example, the nil calculus was protected by the Yuki Onna and allowed them to generate an eternal blizzard that hid their village from humans. Kabane's calculus is the life calculus. It contains the power of humanity rather than kemono. Because of this, it serves to quench Kabane's thirst for human flesh. It also keeps him from transforming on the new moon and strengthens his regeneration ability. As long as the life calculus remains in his possession, he does not need to eat people to survive. Yay!

PERSONAL EFFECTS: The clothes on his back, his life calculus, and a bottle of perfume designed to hide kemono stank.
PRIZED POSSESSION: There is only one item Kabane would consider to be his prized possession: his life calculus. He does all he can to keep it on his person as not only does it keep his ghoulish appetite at bay, it is also the sole gift he's received from his missing parents.
