CHARACTER
• name Kabane • nicknames Dorotabo • age 13 • height 151cm, 4'11 • weight 48kg, 106lbs • physical contact Hug this boy. He needs it! • romance If asked, Kabane will state his guardian Mr. Inugami as his lover. Because he loves him. As a guardian. He literally has no concept of a romantic relationship. • fighting Always. • injuries or death If your character can kill him, bring it the fuck on. Injuries will quickly heal, so please go nuts. • medical information Kabane is a human-kemono (monster) hybrid, half human and half ghoul. He has no blood. Instead, when he's injured, a white flame erupts from the wound and begins to regenerate his damaged tissue. • mind reading If I provide the information, it's free game. No need to ask permission. • mind control Yes, but please plot this one out with me first.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
• visual At first glance, Kabane looks like any other edgy thirteen year old boy. His dark hair is messy, his hoodie features a spine and rib cage, he sports a pair of red hero gloves, and he wears his sneakers without socks like a heathen. All very standard for a rebel rascal. Upon closer inspection, however, his thousand yard stare is an ever-present indicator that something deeper has gone wrong. He's also got a tan and decent muscle definition for a young teen. Yay, child labor. • aural Kabane can be a bit flat in delivery and slow to speak, but he is always straightforward. • olfactory Kabane smells terrible. Unfortunately, we never get a description of what this smell might be like, only that it is unique to kemono and that the human villagers Kabane lived with couldn't stand it. They refused to eat around him and didn't allow him to go to school because of it. Other kemono don't seem to mind it in the slightest and rather use it to identify their own, so we can assume it's a bit animalistic. Sort of like how your dog is completely enamored with your foot odor. If your characters aren't completely human, we can play around with the intensity of the stench and whether or not it bothers your character! But he also comes equipped with perfume designed to stave off the smell so that he can hang with the human crowd. • demeanour Kabane's default is awkward and stiff like he's never quite sure what to do with himself when he isn't being actively useful. He has good posture and manners, but lacks knowledge of any kind of etiquette or propriety. He speaks logically, maturely adapting to his situation, while simultaneously having a simplistic, childish understanding of the world. He experiences a decent range of emotion, and yet is only just learning how to express those emotions on his face. All of this means he's adorably out of place at the best of times and disturbingly vacant at the worst.
ABILITIES
• pseudo-immortality Ghouls do not appear to die of old age. With ghoul fire in their veins instead of blood, their bodies don't even seem to deteriorate much. According to Mr. Inugami's limited knowledge, the only thing that eventually wears down a ghoul is reproduction, which consists of sharing a ghoul's flame with others in order to turn them into ghouls. Every time a ghoul shares their flame with another living creature, their flame weakens until it eventually goes out. • regeneration Part of what ensures a ghoul's immortality is their amazing ability to regenerate. Kabane has been shot through the forehead, decapitated, cut into pieces, and even burned alive, but as long as enough of his brain remains, his ghoul fire will rebuild everything from scratch. It is implied but not stated outright that the only way around this is to completely destroy his brain faster than he can heal the damage. This should theoretically kill him for good as at least part of his brain needs to remain in some form for regeneration to take place. • kemono strength Most kemono seem to be stronger than humans, and ghouls are no exception. Kabane is at least powerful enough to tear limbs from their bodies and swift enough to leap up the length of a redwood. • lack of pain Because he is a ghoul, Kabane feels no pain, no matter how cruelly he is tortured. • kemono stench All kemono reek to high heaven. The manga has yet to compare the stench to anything, but it's bad enough that while staying in Deer Village Kabane was not allowed to be near anyone while they ate. Though humans are generally disgusted by the smell, other kemono aren't bothered by it at all. Rather, they use it as a way to identify and track their own. • monster transformation When the new moon hits, all hell breaks loose. While it's implied that ghouls are capable of being perfectly rational most of the time, the new moon heralds a disturbing transformation, both physical and mental. Ghouls will go mad with a craving for flesh, and any meal they partake will immediately begin to rot in their grip. Their bodies also morph, taking on the terrifying visage of a decaying demon. At Kabane's current canonpoint, he intends to learn how to control the ghoul transformation on his own terms, but he has not yet achieved this. • life calculus Every kemono calculus is imbued with an essence or power that aligns with the abilities of one species of kemono. Each of these calculi can amplify the right user's power. For example, the nil calculus was protected by the Yuki Onna and allowed them to generate an eternal blizzard that hid their village from humans. Kabane's calculus is the life calculus. It contains the power of humanity rather than kemono. Because of this, it serves to quench Kabane's thirst for human flesh. It also keeps him from transforming on the new moon and strengthens his regeneration ability. As long as the life calculus remains in his possession, he does not need to eat people to survive. Yay!
OPT-OUT
• body horror Kabane lends himself to a very particular brand of body horror thanks to his regeneration ability. Rather than reconnecting severed body parts, he simply grows new ones, which means he leaves many bits and pieces of himself behind. This is played for laughs because Kabane doesn't register that this may disturb people. • humans as meat Many kemono eat people, either because they have no choice or just because it's their preference. In fact, the only reason Kabane doesn't is because he's lucky enough to have the one and only life calculus. This may become a big deal during events or if he loses said calculus. • torture/abuse Kabane is placed in his aunt's care at about one year of age. From that moment until he leaves Deer Village at thirteen, he is treated as subhuman by everyone around him. This destroys his emotional development and is still readily apparent in his present actions. At one point, he takes hold of an enemy's hand and threatens to break her fingers one by one until she talks, citing casually that his cousin had used the same tactics on him.
